Well I am officially a blogger. This metaphor came from my experience in life and crystallized during a recent wellsite visit to an Exploration well being drilled at the South Belridge Field on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. We cut 60 feet of core in the Temblor Formation. The single 60 foot barrel was cut into two 30 foot barrels on the rig floor. These barrels were then laid out indivually on the ground on tripods to be further cut up with a big saw into 3 foot sections. In order to properly describe and box the core one needs to know the proper orientation. As the 2 large barrels were laid down, it became a little confusing as to which was the top of the top barrel and which was the top of the bottom barrel. I realized in a moment that even though the bottom of the top barrel and the top of the bottom barrel were exactly the same depth - they were distinctly different spots. So how can the same place actually be different? Oh did I mention it was 3:00 a.m.? As in life it is truly a matter of perspective, orientation, and alignment. Although one may be content to be at the top of the bottom of the barrel, one would not really want to be at the bottom of the top of the barrel. Why this is - who knows? As for trying to get there - one would tend to fall to the bottom of the top of the barrel, but rise to the top of the bottom of the barrel. I like to think of it as percolating, somewhat effortlessly, but with some guidance and perhaps a few well placed adjustments like firing your retro-rockets. Clearly one doesn't strive for the top of the bottom of the barrel. That would be silly. Of course falling to the bottom of the top of the barrel doesn't sound to positive to me, and although arriving a exactly the same place - from my perspective - it's not the same at all. So there you have it - my new blog to discuss this metaphor for life and how it might serve someone else as I think it will serve me.
